Success Stories in Systems Biology
Systems biology approaches are enabling life scientists, for the first time, to study the complex and dynamic interplay between the components of a system, be it at the level of a cell, tissue, organ, organism or population. This can now go beyond understanding function, to enable intervention in the behaviour of the system in a predictive and rational manner. Model-driven, multi-scale analysis is at the heart of this approach.
From modelling a single cell organism to an entire organ, from discovering new drugs to improving efficiency in food production, cutting edge systems biology research in Europe is already having significant impacts in health, agriculture and bio-economy. The ISBE team has compiled this set of sixteen case studies to highlight the work being done utilising a systems approach as well as the tools and resources supporting systems biologists.
